Overlanding has rapidly become one of the most popular forms of RV life across a wide range of RVers. This trend of camping off-the-grid in more remote areas has been facilitated by the rapid growth of specialty trailers built for such adventures. One of the leaders in manufacturing adventure-style is Boreas Campers in Pueblo, Colorado.
The Boreas XT trailer stands apart from the majority of other “teardrop/off-grid” trailers due to its zero-wood construction. The 16-foot XT carries a lifetime chassis warranty, and has the highest cargo space of any off-grid trailer of this size. The 2024 model is the best yet according to Matt Reichel, company founder and president,
“At Boreas Campers we want to continue to be a leader in progressing the capabilities of the off-road trailer market in North America,” says Reichel. “Our customers want a premium camper that can go as far off-road as their overland tow vehicle. The way we build the XT, and the addition of more standard features, places our 2024 model at the head of the off-grid trailer market.”
Premium Quality Chassis Design
The base for the Boreas XT off-road trailer is a powdercoated heavy-duty steel chassis. It’s carried by a state-of-the-art Cruisemaster CRS2 independent suspension and a multi-axis Cruisemaster DO35 hitch assembly. The two Cruisemaster components maximize smooth towing and ride quality in the tow vehicle. They also minimize jarring of the body, components, and gear carried in the 2,200-pound (UVW) composite and metal lightweight, off-road trailer.
Boreas also uses 32-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires mounted on 17-inch steel rims with electric brakes. The 32-inch tires and independent suspension give the trailer more than 19 inches of ground clearance.
Large Interior, Nice Kitchen
The most important aspect of camping off-grid is being comfortable when camp is setup. The Boreas XT excels in that arena. It takes less than a minute to open the sealed rear door to the galley and slide out the stainless-sink. For 2024, the sink has a 16-inch, 20,000BTU Partner camp stove hidden on another slide beneath it.
The Boreas XT carries 30 gallons of freshwater, 11 gallons of propane, and a Truma C60 12V freezer/fridge. They all combine to make multi-day camping trips a breeze.
There are also two large storage compartment in the galley, and two more inside the spacious, six-foot, seven-inch-long interior (which sleeps two). Reichel says the Boreas XT has more than 40 cubic feet of storage. That equates to “more than any other offroad camper of its size,” he adds.
More Features and Options In 2024
Multiple new features are found in the 2024 XT off-road trailer. Those include Victron electrical components used throughout the camper including a GX50 five-inch touch screen monitor in the cabin, a 30-amp MPPT controller, a Victron Phoenix Smart Charger for charging via shorepower, and an Orion Smart Charger for charging from the seven-pin connection of the tow vehicle.
The new model also carries a Battle Born 100Ah heated lithium battery, with a second one as an option. They are fed by a standard 100-watt solar panel mounted on the roof to which a single 200-watt panel, or multiple panels for up to 500 watts of solar power, can be added.
Four-Season Trailer
The 2024 Boreas XT has 1.5-inch insulated walls and ceilings. The interior is heated by a Propex 6500 forced-air furnace mounted on the outside in a plastic hardcase. This year it also offers a Nomadic X2 12-volt A/C in place of the standard ceiling-fan system.
The low-profile 8,000-BTU A/C unit is permanently mounted on the rooftop. It is rated to run off-grid without a generator for about eight hours with a dual-battery system. Its low-profile also allows the XT to fit inside a seven-foot-tall garage door opening.
“We’re thrilled to introduce these upgrades to the 2024 Boreas Campers XT model,” says Reichel. “The XT was already in a league of its own based on its ruggedness, and these new features make it the perfect match for avid outdoors folks to experience nature at a new level. Whether you’re a devoted off-roader, a weekend warrior, or a full-time nomad, the XT model is the ultimate companion for your adventures.”
The 2024 Boreas XT, with all the standard features, has an MSRP of $44,990.
