Our Favorite Teardrop Trailers For 2023
As one of the original campers, teardrop trailers have come a long way. What was once a simple step up from a tent has become a full category in the RV industry.
When I purchased my first teardrop trailer nearly 20 years ago, it was a basic bed on wheels with an outdoor galley kitchen (sans sink and fridge) in the back. What it lacked in space and amenities was made up for in many roadside stares, some great adventures, and excellent mileage for my tow vehicle.
Teardrops are now little power wagons. They are equipped with kitchens with 12-volt fridges and water tanks, full solar setups, roof racks with rooftop tents, and even enough space to bring along the entire family.
However, the basics still prevail. A teardrop, in the pure sense of the word, is still a tiny trailer with a bed and a rear galley kitchen. They typically range between six and eight feet long and have a dry weight of around 1,000 lbs. They can be towed with nearly any vehicle, and the lightest campers can even be towed by a Toyota Prius or an EV.
Sorry, but most teardrops do not have a bathroom.
Unfortunately, the teardrop I picked up for $4,000 nearly 20 years ago is more difficult to find these days. Because of their popularity, the prices on these miniature marvels have increased exponentially.
If you search around, you can still find some preowned, affordable teardrops. However, if you want a new one, be prepared to pay around $10,000. Some of the more decked-out trailers come in at around $25,000.
For 2023 travels, we have found a range of the best teardrops and teardrop companies. These include trailers with all the bells and whistles, as well as a few that are a great mix of affordability and comfort in a small package.
Oregon Trail’R
Oregon Trail’R makes the top of the list because they have not only been around for over a decade, but they allow so much customization for each of their five models.
This company borrows much of their building techniques from boat manufacturer businesses. These little campers are tough and can handle some rough roads. They can come as base models or with all the bells and whistles.
The base FronTear camper comes with a custom chassis, 15-inch wheels, and a marine-grade Baltic birch interior. It starts at around $18,000.
The Deluxe model hovers around $29,000. The smaller DoDrop has a minimal interior, but it only weighs 600 lbs and comes in at $8,500.
nüCamp T@G
If you can’t go without some luxuries, then the nüCamp T@G is where it’s at. This popular brand has everything you need to live tiny on the road.
The T@G comes in two different sizes: the standard T@G is 6′ 8″ wide and nearly 14 feet long, and the XL is 7′ 8″ wide and the same length. Each of the campers have a beautiful interior with heat and AC, Amish-made cabinetry, and a stargazer window.
The kitchen is what sets the T@G apart from many other teardrop trailers. The 2023 model features a standard microwave, a two-burner stove, and a sink with an eight-gallon fresh water tank. The standard “fridge” is an Otterbox cooler, but that can be removed to plug in a 12-volt fridge.
With all their amenities, these two campers are a little bit heavier than most teardrop trailers. The standard T@G has a dry weight of 1,282 lbs. and the XL comes in at 1,418 lbs.
Rustic Trail Teardrops
Rustic Trail puts a little kitchen space in most of their campers. This is perfect if you camp in a place with inclement weather and don’t want to cook outside.
This family-owned company is located in North Carolina and has a nice range of campers to choose from—including a few you can actually stand up inside.
The Papa Bear is a classic teardrop shape, but it has a dinette that can be converted into a bed. A simple cabinet area at the front can be DIY’d into an interior kitchen space. For a little more storage, the Grizzly Bear includes a wraparound dinette/bed with storage and upper cabinets.
These teardrop trailers come in at under 1,500 lbs and cost under $17,000.
Colorado Teardrops
Colorado Teardrops keeps the classic teardrop style but adds in off-road capabilities with its seven models. In fact, three of the models can fit a family of four!
The Mt. Massive model (around $33,000) is the company’s most popular model and happens to come with an interior dinette that converts into a queen bed, plus two bunk beds for children. The outdoor kitchen includes strong swing-out doors with shelving and an open cabinet space for customization.
This company might be one of the first companies to build an EV-friendly teardrop trailer. The Boulder teardrop can also fit a family of four and comes with backup power for your vehicle. This trailer is still in the prototype phase but might just change teardrop camping forever.
inTech Luna
The Luna by inTech is an example of how far teardrops have come. This beautiful camper has all the amenities and the best views in the teardrop world, with a fairly decent price for what you get.
With a huge window at the front of this teardrop, the interior space is increased. This interior can also be converted from the typical bed to a living and dining space with just a few adjustments. The galley kitchen also has it all: a 12-volt fridge, two-burner stove, farmhouse sink, and plenty of storage.
For around $24,000, this trailer also comes with an interior fireplace, exterior awning, roof rack, and even an optional cassette toilet. (Okay, maybe some teardrops do come with bathrooms.)
